Shigefusa Yari-ganna 4-sun (120mm) with Handle and Saya

This is not a kitchen item, but as it is made by Shigefusa, a chef/cooking fan cum woodworker will surely be interested, I'll put it up in this section as well.

A very very, ve~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ry unusual item came in from Shigefusa, after..., how many years??? lemme check..., wow, ordered on March 2009, so, over 6 years ago....

It is an ancient plane, used from Nara period until Muromachi period (apx AD700~1500), prior to block plane invention, brought back to life in modern Showa by an ultra famous temple builder, Nishioka Tsunekazu, who led the restoration of Houryuji temple tower in Showa (commencing from 1934.) This restoration used ancient technique bringing back it's original form, which was lost by Meiji restoration applying modern building technique.

For this restoration, Nishioka-san researched the ancient tools used thru ancient documents, IIRC, some from Shousouin, and learned that a no longer existing tool called Yari-ganna is required to put on the specific finish. He worked with Shirataka-san and brought this ancient lost tool back to life!

This is a very very unusual case of anything that has been lost revived, and made readily available from various sources.

I don't have the photo of the blade yet, but it should look pretty much exactly like the Yokoyama Yari-ganna that I refinished to Shigefusa style, shown at the end of below page.
